HISTORY

Waynesville Inn and Golf Club has a rich and storied history that dates back nearly a century, rooted in the scenic mountains of Western North Carolina.

Originally a dairy farm owned by Jack Welch in the early 1920s, the property was transformed into a golf destination when Jim Long acquired the land and enlisted legendary golf course architect Donald Ross. In 1926, Ross famously sketched the layout for the original nine-hole course—known as the “Carolina Nine”—on a napkin.

The old dairy barn was repurposed into a clubhouse featuring a card room, dance hall, and living quarters for the club’s first golf pro.

Over the years, the club expanded:

  • In 1929, an additional 50 acres were acquired to complete the Dogwood course.
  • By 1935, the iconic Lodge was built using local stone, and in 1939, the Woodcrest building was added to accommodate longer guest stays.
  • In 1946, new owners W.T. Eller and George Kimball modernized the property, adding a putting green, conference space, locker rooms, and the TapRoom bar.
  • The club continued to evolve through the decades, with further expansions and renovations, including the addition of the Brookside building and Golfview upgrades in the 2000s.

In 2021, the property was purchased by Raines, a hospitality development firm, which launched a major renovation and rebranding effort. Partnering with Bobby Weed Golf Design, they transformed the original 27-hole layout into a refined 18-hole resort course, added a wedge course, driving range, short game complex, and modernized guest accommodations. The redesign honors Ross’s original vision while introducing contemporary amenities and a renewed sense of “mountain chic”.

Today, the Waynesville Inn and Golf Club stands as a blend of historic charm and modern luxury, offering guests a unique experience steeped in tradition and surrounded by the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
